When you think of cross country, most people think grueling miles, intense sprints, and running up steep hills. Doesn’t sound fun does it? But contrary to popular belief, cross country is an experience you don’t want to miss out on, and here is why.
Coach Roger Warnes, a coach of 48 years, loves coaching cross country. He likes to see people improve and run a personal best, coaching students who thought they couldn’t run a mile, do one in under five minutes. His favorite part of cross country is making it to CIF and running really well. Last year, the team finished third. This year he thinks the team can do really well. “We have a lot of boys that are capable of running under five minutes for a mile now,” he said, “when you have six boys like that on the start line, that is a good sign.”
Senior leader Colton Baker loves the team aspect of cross country. He believes that the varsity team can make it to State. His personal goal this year is to win CIF. “This is The best team we have had in the past four years.”
Senior leader Alex Schindler likes running with his friends, feeling stronger and more confident everyday. He also loves racing. “My favorite race is WoodBridge, it’s an overnight meet in Irvine, California. It’s a really fun experience,” he said, “Tons of schools go every year. The course is fairly flat, there are lots of cuts and turns. There are always a ton of people cheering.”
Senior leaders Sarah Garcia and Selena Trejo love the bond that the team shares. When asked about her favorite part about cross county, Selena responded “Sarah Garcia,” showing the bond they both share.
Cross country is an amazing experience, not only to better yourself and improve your personal achievements, but also the opportunity to experience new things, and to build bonds with your teammates.
