Atascadero High School offers various unique programs that aim to develop students’ leadership skills and prepare them for success in their future endeavors. For instance, students enrolled in Mr. Weatherly’s welding shop learn the fundamentals of welding metal and entrepreneurial skills. At the end of the year, students showcase their skills through a project of their design. These projects serve as inspiration for students looking to further develop their skills and explore their passions. Furthermore, the projects are auctioned off at the State Fair, allowing students to keep the money they earn.
One Exceptional example is Diedrich Hoppe who spent around 70+ hours creating a BBQ, which he later sold for approximately $6,000 at the Paso Robles State Fair, doubling the cost of the materials. This welding class not only teaches practical skills but also nurtures entrepreneurial abilities and provides opportunities to network with individuals beyond the school.
I asked Diedrich about how he felt about his experience and although he was not modest in his answers his design must have been worth the investment.
