Atascadero High School (AHS) has made a name for itself in the worlds of local sports, with its varsity teams consistently dominating whatever sport they play. However, in our athletic prowess, there’s been ongoing debate about the school colors orange and gray . To delve deeper into this discussion, I interviewed two members of the AHS varsity football team to gather their thoughts on the colors and their experiences in sports.
**Joshua Lopez, Varsity football, Left Guard **
As a four-year football veteran, Joshua Lopez shared his journey into the sport, which began when he was inspired by his older brother. “I wanted to join football because my older brother played, and because it seemed fun,” he said.
When asked about the school colors, Joshua expressed a positive view, saying, “I like the school colors, to be honest, but I would make the gray a little bit darker.” He also reminisced about his best memory , which was when the team beat San Luis Obispo twice. “It was an exhilarating feeling, and it brought us closer as a team.” Though he won’t continue playing football after high school, he noted his favorite teammate, Kenny Muller, as someone who constantly pushes him to improve.
**Cameron Pickard, Varsity Football, Linebacker**
Cameron Pickard’s journey in football is actually very recent. having only started playing during the COVID-19 pandemic due to boredom. “I fell in love with the sport over time,” he admitted. When it comes to the school colors, he actually likes the orange, although along with other athletes, would much rather have black instead of the gray.
Cameron’s standout moment in his football career came when the team won the CIF championship. “Winning CIF was incredible; it felt like all our hard work had paid off.” He, too, is not planning to continue his football career after high school, but has cherished the bonds formed on the team.
In conclusion, while Atascadero High School sports dominate the local scene, the school colors have sparked a lively discussion. The majority of the players interviewed expressed pride in the Orange and Grey, with suggestions for minor adjustments. As these athletes reflect on their experiences, it is clear that the memories and friendships forged in their time at AHS will remain long after they hang up their cleats.
Atascadero High School continues to foster a strong sports culture, one that thrives on passion, dedication, and a vibrant community spirit—colors and all.
