At Atascadero High School, Yostin Perez is more than just a tutor—he’s a friendly face for English learners. He creates a warm and welcoming space, helping students feel at home as they learn English. Yostin’s approachable nature makes him an important part of the AHS community.
Yostin has a long-standing connection with his 4th-period English Language Development class teacher, Mr. Duarte. Mr. Duarte describes Yostin as ” kindhearted and empathetic,” highlighting the positive impact Yostin has on his peers.
“I’m just helping them know how this school works and how to check their grades,” Yostin says. “If we have the same teachers, I can also tell them what that teacher or class is like.” His support is crucial for students feeling lost in a new school.
Yostin’s own experiences inspire him to help others. “I started like them: without knowing English, and there was only one teacher in Middle School who would help me,” he shares. “When I came to high school, I was by myself. Knowing what that’s like, I want to help them as much as I can.”
Looking ahead, Yostin has big dreams. When asked what he wanted to achieve in high school, he expressed his goal of attending Cuesta College and becoming a veterinarian.
Thanks to Yostin, students learn English and feel connected and supported in their new environment. His kindness and dedication make a difference in the lives of many at AHS.
