Waxy Caps are small colorful mushrooms native to the western coastal forests. They provide an invaluable service: decomposition. They break down organic matter. The fruiting bodies of the mushroom are the sex organs, while the actual body is the mycelium under the ground. They are often overlooked, but are an important part of life.
Great Spangled Fritillaries are small bright orange butterflies from the forest and rivers of Washington State. They are a pollinator (an insect that conveys pollen to a plant allowing fertilization) and play a crucial role keeping the plant population thriving. Although they are very fragile, they are very important.
Banana Slugs are a vibrant yellow land slug native to regions along the western coast. They keep the forest floor clean of debris. Banana Slugs will eat almost anything, but they don’t have teeth so they must grind up their food. They are so good at camouflage, that many people miss them.
Make sure to look more closely at wonderful little creatures hidden deep in the foliage.
As climate change is a major issue that the world at large is facing. It looks like one big picture from far away, but looking up close, reveals new magnitudes of detail. But, focusing on one aspect of climate change makes it manageable. The same concept applies with the three posters. Each creature displayed in the poster is a small part of the world but provides a major service to mother earth, so we need to view the climate as a whole as well as always looking at the little things. We need to work together to fix our beautiful Earth before more creatures disappear.
