What is PBIS?
At AHS, our PBIS values are: Accountable, Honorable, and Safe. These core expectations guide student behavior in classrooms, on campus, and in the community. We encourage students to take ownership of their actions, act with integrity, and contribute to a safe and welcoming environment for all.
Atascadero High School uses PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) to create a positive, safe, and supportive school environment where every student can thrive. PBIS is a research-based approach that focuses on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviors across all areas of the school. We consistently reinforce our behavior expectations through multiple channels to ensure every student is informed and supported. These reminders are visible throughout campus signage, regularly shared in school-wide morning announcements, and introduced at the start of each semester during our First Day Back slideshow. In addition, teachers actively reinforce these expectations in their classrooms, helping to create a unified and positive school culture.
Instead of only responding to misbehavior, PBIS helps prevent it by clearly outlining expectations, recognizing students for doing the right thing, and providing consistent support when challenges arise. Through this approach, we aim to build a strong school culture where respect, responsibility, and kindness are at the heart of everything we do. At AHS we have several in class and school wide celebrations for student. We Celebrate Student Success with 5-Star Points, Paws of Recognition, Achievement Badges, and Milestone Moments —For Wins Big and Small, In and Out of the Classroom we are always looking for more ways to celebrate our amazing Greyhounds.
We follow a clear PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) flow chart to address unwanted behavior in a consistent, respectful, and restorative way. This system helps staff respond to behavior based on its level of impact, using clear steps that prioritize student growth, accountability, and safety. Our goal is always to teach, not punish—guiding students back to positive choices through reflection, redirection, and support. Minor behaviors are handled with in-class strategies and reteaching, while more serious or repeated behaviors may involve restorative conversations, family collaboration, and support from our dedicated school counselors, administrators, or behavior specialists. With this approach, we create a safe, inclusive school environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
By working together—students, staff, and families—we’re helping all learners succeed both academically and socially.
