Mike Gilmore, our new assistant principal, is a great new addition to our administration. He actually grew up and went to school in Fresno. After High School, he went to Humboldt State University, and graduated with a degree in Biology and Botany. He went on to spend 13 years teaching high school science, AVID, ASB and many other classes before coming to Atascadero High School.
As a principal, his goal is to help students find what they are passionate about, and help them find the means to become successful in that field. As students continue to grow, he wants every student to be able to open, and keep open, as many doors as possible, knowing that when students find something they love to do, they will be able to be that much more successful at it. He hopes by getting to know students as people, he can help them find the classes, pathways and colleges that will suit their passions and help them grow.
He is especially excited to use his unique background and education to help our school’s upcoming science programs. Mr. Gilmore says that if he did not become a science teacher, he would have been a veterinarian or game warden due to his love of biology and animals.
In his free time, Mr. Gilmore loves to fish, hike, boat, garden, woodwork, and just about any other activity you can do outside. Gilmore has also been married to his wife for 24 years. She is his biggest source of inspiration, along with his friends and his dog, Keys. He loves The River, by Peter Heller, the original True Grit movie, and tacos of any kind.
We are glad to have Mr. Gilmore on our campus and can’t wait to see how he leaves his mark on this school. Don’t be afraid to say hi to him when you see him on campus, and don’t be scared about reaching out to him either. He is excited to help out on campus, and he appreciates any attempts to make connections with students.
