The Water Polo Boat Race is an annual competition where students create a boat using only cardboard and duct tape, and paddles made from old brooms and more duct tape. There were seven teams in total: senior boys, senior girls, junior boys, junior girls, sophomore/freshman boys (combined due to lack of new first-year students), sophomore girls, and freshman girls. The race consists of three rounds. The first round had all the girl teams, with the freshman girls and junior girls advancing to the finals. The second round featured all the boy teams, with the junior and senior boys making it to the finals. In the final round, the freshmen girls pulled off a surprise upset, followed by the junior girls. The senior boys, expected to win, came in third, and the junior boys finished last.
After the race, I decided to ask the boys water polo coach Conrad the following questions
When did the water polo boat race start?
I started the boat race when I took over the program in 2015.
What was your inspiration for the boat race?
I started the boat race in 2005 at El Diamante High School as a way to bond with the athletes.
What were your thoughts on this boat race/who did you expect to win?
I’m so proud and happy with the effort I put into each boat.
I might have had a little influence on the freshmen girls’ boat by suggesting that they study how a canoe works.
What is the purpose of doing this with the team?
How do you think the water polo team is going to do this season?
I have an excellent feeling about this year. The energy feels like 2021.
