AHS Choirs Announce Exciting Upcoming Events
The Atascadero High School Chamber Choir is an immersive vocal class featuring students from every grade. Our AHS Chamber Choir is our highest leveled vocal class, packed with musical theory, vocal ability, and choral knowledge. While the choir teacher, Mrs. Jones, teaches this fourth period Chamber Choir class, she also proudly teaches our Mixed Choir during 5th period, our piano classes during 6th and 7th period, and teaches choir at the middle school in the mornings. With the start of the 2024-2025 school year, our newly elected officers are excited to help facilitate and manage concerts, performances, publicity, advertising, and promotion.
Meet our AHS Choir officers!
President – Hannah Hiatt (Grade 12, third year member)
Vice President – Lucy Peterson (Grade 11, third year member)
Social Media Manager – Morgan McEntire (Grade 11, third year member)
Our choirs are excited to announce our upcoming events, performances, and news. Our first event of the year will be our annual Fall Concert at the Atascadero Middle School Gymnasium on Thursday, October 10. This event will be open to the public free of charge. Following this will be the Cuesta College Jazz Festival on Friday, November 8th. This event is exclusive for our Chamber Choir and is also open to the public. The AHS Chamber Choir has an exciting set list for these two upcoming events, and they are as followed:
Time – Composed by Jennifer Lucy Cook
Away – Composed by Christine Tavares Mocha
Haven’t We Met – Composed by Ruth Bachelor and Kenny Rankin, Arranged by Rosana Eckert
Along with a couple others, here are a few songs that the 5th period Mixed Choir is working on for the upcoming Fall Concert in October:
900 Miles – Folk Song arranged by Roger Emerson
What Was I Made For – Composed by Jennifer Lucy Cook
The AHS choirs are also excited to announce that for the practice of their jazz unit, they have ordered enough handheld microphones and cables for every person in class. With this new technology, practice for the choir performances will be professional and efficient.
“Our choir is such a community and it makes learning the music and doing performances so much more fun because of all the people. So if you’re thinking about joining, just know it is one of the most fun and memorable things you will do in high school” said president Hannah Hiatt. Buck Skarda, grade 11, agrees. He adds, “Just do it, it’s a lot of fun, you will make good friends, and people are welcoming. You won’t regret it.” We also have word of some of the Chamber Choir member’s favorite pieces for the upcoming Jazz festival. “[My favorite song] would probably have to be ‘Time’ just because of how fast-paced it is. All of our jazz music this year is phenomenal” said Milo Graceffa, grade 10. Aubrey Villa, grade 9, adds a different perspective. “I really like ‘Away.’ I sing tenor on that one. The tenor part is so much fun, but I really really love the harmonies on it. It sounds so cool every time I hear it.”
Aubrey ends with some advice; “Even if you don’t make it into Chamber Choir, the people in the Mixed Choir are all really kind and sweet, and in my short time there it was just a great community. It’s a wonderful community no matter what class you’re in. We’ve also already learned and done so much in this short time of the school year so far.”
