There are many seasonal movies for the different holidays, Like halloween movies, and christmas movies, but since not everyone celebrates christmas. Why don’t we talk about a movie set in the snow during the winter. I’m talking about John Carpenter’s 1982 “The Thing”. The Thing is classic and It’s shocking that many In Generation Z haven’t watched it, I certainly enjoyed it.
It’s a classic “who-done-it” but with a twist. In an outpost in the middle of Antarctica, A group of people run up to their outpost while shooting at a husky, the people at the outpost shoot back at the people firing at the dog and they take the dog in with them. They retrace where the group came from and stumble upon the remains of a Russian outpost, it has been completely destroyed and everyone is dead. and there was a giant ice block in the shape of a man that had been thawed out.
In order to know what happens next you’ll need to see the movie. While The Thing is a cult classic today, back in 1982 it was really frowned upon and hated due to the gore. The gore in the movie wasn’t that bad, but people were not used to it at the time and thought it was gross, due the special effects being pretty good for their time.
But did you know that The Thing is actually a remake of a movie from 1951 also called The Thing, but the two movies are pretty different.
While the classic one is more set around chaos and trying to stop this monstrous thing they found in a crashed spaceship, the 1982 movie is more of a murder mystery with the thing being a horrifying flesh amalgamation rather than a tall man with claws. There was also a remake in 2011, which basically retold the story from 1982.
