Interview Highlights: Zach Savino and Taytem Ferrell Discuss Surf Team and Surf Club
Zach Savino and Taytem Ferrell joined us today to share insights about the Surf Team and Surf Club.
- Surf Club Information: The Surf Club meets every Thursday in Room 2004. Feel free to stop by for the Google Classroom code!
- Community Focus: “We wanted to create a community of surfers in Atascadero,” said Taytem Ferrell, emphasizing the club’s inclusive spirit.
- Surf Team Structure: “The Surf Team competes in a competition format, and while we travel for events, we’re not CIF-sanctioned, which means you can surf and participate in other sports simultaneously,” explained Zach Savino.
- Inclusivity of Surf Club: The Surf Club is casual and aims to build community; everyone is welcome to join, regardless of their surfing experience!
Have you ever walked onto campus, and wanted a place to learn how to surf? A group to travel to the beach with after school? A community of like-minded people to hit the waves with? Well, look no further! Surf Club can provide all of the above and more.
Meeting in room H2004, they gather every Thursday to hang out and talk about all things surf, or anything else that’s on their minds. “It’s just a great environment out here,” Zach Savino, the club treasurer says. “Close to every day, we’re out in the water, having a great time. You know, living the dream.”
They also surf competitively, taking to the waves in tournaments against other schools. “We have surf team, which is a lot more competitive,” Says Zach. “We compete against other schools for medals, and a kind of legacy.” Currently, they are participating in the Scholastic Surf Series league, which features Morro Bay, Ventura, and Santa Barbara.
And you want to know what’s really wild? This is the first surf club in Atascadero High School history. “I wouldn’t ask ‘how do you like surf club,’” Nathan French, the club treasurer says. “I would ask, ‘how do I feel about innovating something that’s never been done in the school before?’ How many times in Atascadero has there been a surf club, let alone a surf team?” The answer to that question is zero.
Surf club also does collaborations with other clubs, like Earth Club, where they do beach cleanups and breakfast on the beach with our little environmentalism group. If you’re interested in joining, simply visit room H2004 during lunch, or you can find their Instagram account and send them a message, @atascaderohighsurfclub.
